Businesses from across the South West celebrate at the Media Innovation Awards.



 

South West businesses celebrated at Media Innovation Awards 2009

 

Businesses in Devon, Cornwall, Bristol and Bath beat tough competition to win prizes at the Media Innovation Awards 2009, at a gala dinner held last night in Bristol to celebrate and recognise the innovative use of media and design in the region.

 

The award winners for 16 categories were announced with Devon businesses and a school winning a total of eight awards in the community website, television, virtual world/gaming, collaboration between business and young people, installation/exhibition,  audio/music for screen, independent film/video and most innovative newcomer categories and Bristol businesses winning four awards in the mobile communications, multi-platform project, screen graphics and outstanding contribution to innovation categories. Two Cornish companies won the DVD/CD and corporate website categories, while a Bath design consultancy came away with the remaining two category awards for print graphics and branding.

 

The evening was introduced by Mark Hawkins, chairman of the Media Innovation Awards, and hosted by international sports reporter Rob Walker.

 

The judges awarded the 2009 trophy to Twofour Broadcast for the television project ‘Make My Body Younger’ which was produced for BBC3 and was “a truly innovative concept that was well executed using high impact digital technology to create a health programme with a difference”.

 

Twofour communications community website ‘The Growing Schools Garden’ was given the award for producing a site that had “real life impact for teacher activities and for educational value”. The website www.thegrowingschoolsgarden.org.uk/ was produced for the Department of Children, Schools and Families.

 

Stoke Damerel Community College, in association with Plymouth Children’s Services and Twofour Learning, won the virtual world/gaming award for finding an innovative way to engage with difficult-to-reach young people.

 

Sundog Media was awarded the prize for collaboration between business and young people for producing ‘There 2 Care: The Voice of Young Carers’ with The Young Carers Project at the Zone in association with Plymouth City Council. The judges commented on the amazing animation used to portray the challenging subject matter.

 

‘Freddy’s Story’ produced by Manishima Ico won the installation/exhibition category for “an innovative use of sound employing a variety of techniques and a strong narrative”.

 

Joakim Boren from Joakim Boren Photography was celebrated as the most innovative newcomer for demonstrating outstanding creative and technical ability across a range of work.

 

Paul Roberts Sound based in Kingsbridge won the audio/music for screen category for his innovative use of effects, music and voice in the sound for ‘Humf’ produced for King Rollo Films and Entertainment 1.

 

 Carrion Films in Exeter took the award for the independent film/video category for the production of ‘Scayrecrow’ with funding from Exeter Phoenix in association with Devon County Council. The film was judged “a visually rich, innovative and atmospheric production that held the viewers’ attention to the final frame”.

 

‘Moosehunt’ produced by Simon Games for igFest won the mobile communications category for its brilliant and witty concept.

 

The BBC Natural History Unit was awarded the multiplatform category prize for producing ‘Big Cat Live’ and using technology to push the boundaries of natural history.

 

‘Britain from Above’, produced by 422 South for Lion Television and BBC1, took the award for the screen graphics category for its innovative use of GPS data to visualise and communicate the dynamic nature of modern life in the UK.

 

The Pervasive Media Studio, a collaboration by Watershed and HP Labs, won the outstanding contribution to innovation category for bringing the creative community together and encouraging innovative collaborations.

 

‘Tales From The Porth’ produced by Leap-Design for Change, based in St Austell, won the DVD/CD category award for its beautifully shot work with strong narrative. The Interactive CD rom was produced for MAGA the Cornish Language Partnership in association with Matt Hocking, Kieran Holden and Will Coleman.

 

 Gendall Design based in Falmouth won the award for the corporate website category for the website ‘Visit Newquay’ created for Restormel Borough Council. Gendall was awarded the prize for creating a well-built site that was deep and rich in content.

 

The Mytton Williams entry, Pencil Calendar, won the print graphics award for its innovative use of print marketing and its “witty, original, ‘out of the Box’ solution”; it was printed by Opal Print (Bath) on paper supplied by James McNaughton Group Packaging. British Glass Biennale won the branding award for its strong, modern and striking design on both print and exhibition materials and was produced by Mytton Williams for the Ruskin Glass Centre and the British Glass Biennale Project.

 

Karen Stockdale of the Media Innovation Awards said, “We had an exceptionally high number of entries from the creative media industry across the region this year, and the judges have had a very difficult task selecting winners from such a wealth of talent. Twofour Broadcast’s use of innovative ideas makes it a deserving winner for the 2009 trophy.”
