Janey Pointing has been selected to design the trophies for the 17 individual categories, as well as winning the competition to design the trophy received by the overall prize winner for the Media Innovation Awards 2009. She is a mature student who decided to return to full-time education in 2006 so that she could pursue her love of art and all things three dimensional by taking the Applied Arts course. She had the opportunity to study glass making and has used her skills with this medium to create the winning innovative trophy. Janey says her design is based on the aesthetic concept of an ‘umbrella’, as the Plymouth Media Partnership is an umbrella group for the five South West media organisations, “I feel honoured to have won this commission and I hope that my trophies will have pride of place within the recipient’s home or office.”
The competition was open to all students in full time education in the South West and the winner receives £500 to cover the cost of the design and production of the trophy, which will be presented to the overall winner of the Media Innovation Awards at a gala dinner at the Ashton Gate stadium in Bristol on Thursday 12 March.
Karen Stockdale of the Media Innovation Awards said, “The trophy design competition presents an exciting opportunity for young designers to put their creativity to the test and the standard of entries received this year was extremely high. Innovation was the key factor for the trophy design and Janey’s contemporary design is an excellent choice.”
The Media Innovation Awards aim to raise the profile of media and design companies across the region and to celebrate innovative screen-based media by recognising work from a potential 3500 members of the five media cluster groups in the region, The Gloucestershire Media Group, Plymouth Media-Partnership, Cornwall Media Focus, Wessex Media Group and Bristol Media as well as 2000 members of the South West Music Forum, Creative Bath and the South West Design Forum nodes of Designed in Devon, West of England Design Forum, Cornwall Design Forum, Somerset Design Enterprise Network and Dorset Design Forum. A specialist panel of judges will review entries in 17 categories which include television, website, mobile communications, screen graphics and audio projects for screen.
The gala dinner awards event will take place on 12th March 2009 at the Ashton Gate stadium in Bristol.
