MIA 2010 WInners
The evening was introduced by Mark Hawkins, chairman of the Media Innovation Awards, and hosted by BBC Radio Devon presenter, David Fitzgerald.The award winners of the 15 categories were announced, and presented with trophies designed by Plymouth College of Art student Jodie Burns.
Plymouth businesses won 7 awards in the DVD/CD, Corporate web use, Independent film/video, Photographic, Photographic use, Collaboration between business and young people, and Outstanding contribution to innovation categories; Bristol businesses won 3 awards in the Mobile Communications, Live event and Most innovative newcomer/business categories; Gendall Design of Falmouth won two awards for Community Web Use and Print Graphics; Primal Journey of Clayhidon won the Multi-platform project category; Sequoia Films of Poole won the Television award and David Aspinall of Gloucestershire won the Branding category.
Karen Stockdale of the Media Innovation Awards said, “There is hot competition to win one of the coveted Media Innovation Awards and all the winners can be very proud of their achievement as only the finest work has been selected to showcase the wealth of creative talent in the region.”
Company of Designers, a co-production with Routeways in association with Plymouth College of Art and Sunridge and funded by Plymouth City Council won the DVD/CD category with Someone who Listens, which ‘skilfully combined a variety of media resulting in a well produced, inclusive and engaging DVD’.
Twofour won the Corporate web use award for Exeter Family Website, which was produced for Exeter Friendly and was judged ‘an engaging website with a very innovative interface that made the subject matter much more accessible and understandable for clients’.
The Independent film/video award went to Sundog Media for Sea Front which was ‘a very atmospheric and nostalgic production that was beautifully produced’.
The nominations for the Photographic category impressed the judges so much that they decided to give an extra award for Photographic use. The Photographic award went to Joakim Boren for British Design 2010 commissioned by Taxi Studio for BIS Publishers - ‘an excellent series of images that captured a vision of an England untouched by the homogenisation of “starbucks” culture’. In recognition of the way photographs have been used to challenge perceptions and change relationships the judges awarded a Photographic Use award to Routeways Centre produced by Routeways Equal Voices, Stonehouse Youth Project, Devon and Cornwall Constabulary - Plymouth Youth Team, and Plymouth Children and Young People's Trust for ‘an innovative and interesting project giving young people a voice and an interest in photography’.
Growing Live! – a collaboration between Silverstream TV, The Herald and five sixth form students won the Collaboration between business and young people category for ‘a great initiative that involved young people in an authentic experience using professional equipment to produce a real outcome’.
David Pritchard won the Outstanding contribution to innovation award for proving to be ‘one of the most innovative Directors of his generation and for continually innovating in a fast moving, demanding and audience-driven environment’.
Simon Games won the Mobile communications category for Mobile Social Game Engine produced with funding from the Technology Strategy Board. The judges all agreed that Simon Games had used multiple delivery methods very effectively to ensure the maximum amount of interaction and engagement from followers and contributors. This made the application both personal and meaningful.’
The Extended Theatre Experience won the Live event category for ‘extending the boundaries of theatrical experience and offering huge potential for new audiences’. The research project was co-produced by Bristol Old Vic, Watershed and Hewlett Packard Labs in collaboration with director Sally Cookson and film maker Geoff Taylor, with support from the Technology Strategy Board.
Tom Mansfield from Glorious took the Most innovative newcomer/business award ‘for producing exceptionally well crafted, intriguing and innovative work’.
Gendall Design based in Falmouth won the award for Community Web Use for Dott Shot, a co-production with SEA Communications commissioned by Dott Cornwall. The company then also went on to scoop the award for Print Graphics with its University College Falmouth Prospectus 2010- which was described by the judges as ‘an engaging and stylish prospectus that showed the virtues of the organisation in an honest and straight-forward way.’
Primal Journey based in Clayhidon, in association with Tarka L’Herpiniere and Katie Cooper won the Multi-platform project category for Rivers of Ice. The judges were very impressed by this ambitious project and particularly by the well designed website which received over a million hits in just two months.
Sequoia Films based in Poole, won the Television award for Sari Stories which was commissioned by Al Jazeera English for the Witness strand, and presented by Rageh Omaar. The judges gave Sequoia Films the award ‘for producing something that was genuinely innovative and progressive - by giving a community of women in India the skills and means to tell their own stories’.
David Aspinall won the Branding category for his design work produced for Lowd and Klea. The judges awarded the prize for the use of ‘an innovative and individual approach to convey a message and the brand values’.
